Does My Business Website Need Backups?

Quick answer

It depends on how your site is built and hosted. Backups matter whenever content, data, or code could be lost — a bad edit, a failed update, or a break-in. Many managed platforms keep their own copies and can restore things, so the real question is what's covered and how a restore actually works.

What you'd actually be protecting

  • Your pages and wording, which took real effort to get right.
  • Photos, especially job photos you can't re-shoot.
  • Form submissions and customer records, if they're stored on the site.
  • Any custom code or configuration behind features.

Note the order of pain: losing a layout is annoying; losing inquiries or photos is expensive.

The threats aren't only dramatic

Break-ins get the attention, but the common causes are duller: someone deleting the wrong page, an update breaking a feature, a plan lapsing, or a well-meant edit wrecking a layout. Backups are mostly an undo button.

What managed platforms usually cover

Many modern platforms and hosts keep their own copies and can roll a site back, and some keep version history for content. The detail varies a lot: how far back, whether it includes uploaded files and stored data, whether you can trigger it yourself or must ask support, and whether it's on your plan.

The questions to ask

  • What exactly is backed up — pages, images, stored data, code?
  • How often, and how far back can I go?
  • Can I restore it myself, or do I raise a request?
  • How long does a restore take, and does it overwrite anything?
  • Has a restore been tested, or is it theoretical?

That last one matters. A backup nobody has restored is an assumption.

A small amount of self-reliance helps

Keep your own originals of the things that are genuinely irreplaceable: your photos at full size, and a copy of your page wording in a document. If form submissions matter, make sure they land somewhere outside the site too — an inbox, a spreadsheet, or a CRM. See how to track website leads.

How this relates to care plans

Maintenance and backups get bundled together in conversation, but they're not the same thing. Ask specifically what your arrangement includes rather than assuming — see what website maintenance includes. If you want to know what applies to your Simply Built site, ask me and I'll tell you exactly what's covered.

Still not sure what you need?

Give me what you have. I'll help with the rest. No pressure, and nothing is due until your site is built and you like it.
