What Is Google Search Console and Does My Small Business Need It?
Quick answer
Search Console is Google's free tool for website owners. It shows which of your pages Google has crawled and indexed, which searches brought people to you, and any problems Google found. It isn't an advertising tool, and it isn't required for Google to find your site — but it's the only place you can see this information, so it's worth setting up.
What it actually shows you
- Which pages Google has crawled and which it has indexed.
- The searches your pages appeared for, and how often people clicked.
- Problems Google found: pages it couldn't reach, mobile usability issues, errors.
- Whether your sitemap was read successfully.
- Other sites linking to you, as far as Google reports it.
What it is not
It's not Google Ads, and nothing in it is paid. It's not the same as your Google Business Profile, which is the listing with your hours and reviews — that's a separate thing, covered in do I need a Google Business Profile. It doesn't change your rankings, and using it doesn't make Google favour you.
Do you strictly need it?
No. Google can discover and index a public, crawlable website without you doing anything. What you lose without it is visibility into your own situation — whether a page is indexed at all, whether something is blocking Google, and what people searched before clicking. That's genuinely useful when something looks wrong.
Setting it up
You add your site and prove you own it, usually with a small file, a tag in your site's code, or a DNS record. Then submit your sitemap and wait — data accumulates over days and weeks rather than appearing instantly. Whoever manages your site can do the verification part in a few minutes. See what is a sitemap.
What to look at, realistically
You don't need to live in it. Check it when you launch, when you redesign, and every month or two otherwise. Look at whether your important pages are indexed and whether any errors appeared. Small ups and downs in the numbers are normal and not worth chasing.
Keep expectations honest
Search Console tells you what's happening. It doesn't make more happen. Nobody — including Google — can guarantee you a ranking or a certain amount of traffic. See how do I get my new website into Google and what basic SEO means.
