Should I Automate Text Messages to New Leads?

Quick answer

Sometimes. Texting someone back about the inquiry they just submitted can be genuinely useful, if they gave you a mobile number for that purpose and your tools support it. Sending marketing or promotional texts is a different thing with stricter consent expectations. Don't treat one as permission for the other, and don't assume texting is available until it's actually set up.

Two different kinds of text

A reply about the thing someone just asked you — "got your request, calling you at 8" — is a direct response to their action. A monthly promotion is marketing. They feel different to receive and they're treated differently under messaging rules.

The mistake to avoid is letting a quote request quietly become a subscription to your specials.

When an automated text works well

  • They typed a mobile number into your form knowing you'd contact them.
  • The message is short, specific, and identifies your business by name.
  • It goes out once, not as a sequence of five.
  • Replying to it reaches a real person.
  • There's an obvious way to say stop.

Consent, carefully

Say plainly on the form what contacting you means, keep a record of what people agreed to, keep transactional and marketing lists separate, and honor an opt-out immediately and permanently. Don't text numbers you collected for something else, and don't buy lists.

Rules around text messaging vary by location, differ for marketing versus transactional messages, and change over time. I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice — if you plan to text at any real volume, check what applies to your business and your area.

What it depends on technically

Sending texts requires a messaging service connected to your system, a number you're allowed to send from, and in many cases a registration step with the carriers. It's not a switch on a website. That means texting is Custom Build work, and I won't promise it before it's configured.

A reasonable place to start

Email acknowledgment for everyone, and a personal text from you when the situation calls for it. Automate texting later, once you know volume justifies the setup. See can my website send new leads to me by text for the version where you're the one being notified — that's much simpler.
